What Is Hyaluronic Acid Anyway?

Hyaluronic Acid is powerful stuff, and it is something our bodies naturally produce. The word ‘acid’ may seem alarming but don’t be fooled, this gel-like molecule is a moisture-binding ingredient that helps keep skin hydrated and plump.

Hyaluronic Acid is a highly effective moisturiser as it helps retain over 1,000 times its weight in water within the skin cells.

Scientific studies have shown that Hyaluronic Acid helps to improve skin hydration and collagen production.  It also fights free radicals, maintains skin elasticity, and even has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that help with wound healing.

Hyaluronic acid is also a naturally present compound in and around joints.  It helps in both initiating early inflammation for recovery of joint injuries and stopping the natural inflammatory response from going overboard.  It also serves as a lubricant and cushion for cartilage, whilst also minimising cartilage breakdown.

So, why supplement with Hyaluronic Acid if our bodies already produce it?

On average our bodies contain about 15 grams of Hyaluronic Acid.  However, one third of this is degraded and synthesised on a daily basis.  We also produce less and less Hyaluronic Acid as we age leading to sagging and wrinkled skin and less lubrication in the joints.  This is why so many anti-ageing products contain this powerful molecule.

This diagram shows how Hyaluronic Acid (along with Collagen and Elastin) declines as our skin ages:
